As an experienced tour leader and traveller, I’ve visited many European countries, but something always pulled me back to my own country, Bulgaria. People often say that, “There are no coincidences.” For years my mum had been asking me to take a few days off and travel with her. Like many people, I had spent so much time looking for something over the fence. I never looked in my own backyard.
Before I decided to start with this project, my work was about travelling and meeting people from all over the world. I was struck by the reactions of colleagues from other countries as well as partners who visited Bulgaria. I could see with my eyes how the sun, the mountains, the sea views were leaving their reflection in their eyes. They were absorbing and charging with the energy of my own country.
Since a girl age during the Socialism I’ve always wanted to talk to foreigners, those distant and overseas people at that time. Summer international youth camps at the Black Sea, hundreds of pen-friends from the newspapers, English-language school – I was everyday getting closer and closer to my dream. Upon graduation a friend gave me The Agony and the Ecstasy, the Irving Stone’s classical biographical novel about Michelangelo.
